There are many different types of search engines. According to the way of pages are submitted, we can separate them into two categories, Free Submission Search Engines and Manual Submission Search Engines.
Free Submission Search Engines - These search engines allow free submission. In this category there are three types: Directories General Engines and FFA.
1. Directories - Internet Directories engines. Directories are not automatically generated but are compiled by editors. When a website is submitted to a directory it is then catalogued and linked to one or more topics. Experienced editors set up the directories so that they produce more targeted results. Example is Yahoo.com.
2. General Engines - also call Spider Engine or Indexing Search Engines. For this type of engines you just need to enter your web site URL and submit it, you do not need to submit any other details of your web site. The engines will then retrieve your web site details from the Meta Tag or the body of your web site automatically. Example is Google, AltaVista, etc.
3. FFA - Free For All links (FFA) are pages in which links to a website can be entered together with a short comment. Owners of websites enter the registration themselves, and there is no editing board to review the entries. It is free and becomes immediately effective.
There is a down side to this type as many FFA site owners try to collect email addresses from the people who submit to FFA sites and send auto-response advertisement or spam email

Manual Submission Search Engines
Not all the Search Engines accept Auto Submissions. There are three types of Search Engines for which you need to do manual submission: Free manual submission engines, Pay-Per-Inclusion engines and Pay-Per-Click engines.
1. Free manual submission engines You can submit your website without payment on these kind of engines but they need to be submitted manually. For example, AltaVista Free Engine requests you to enter a computer generated image code each time when you login, which means you have to submit your website manually. Another example is open directory engines - dmoz.org. You need to browse in the directory and select the right category before you do your submission.
2. Pay Per Inclusion Engine To advertise your website you need to pay a fee to the search engines. Yahoo is one of these kinds of Engines. The search engines normally index this in 24 hours and your listing will be frequently updated. You will also have to pay a renewal fee for your listing every 6 months or annually this does not guarantee a particular position in the search results, you still need to optimize your web site manually in order to achieve higher ranking.
3. Pay Per Click Search Engine - (also known as Pay Per Ranking, Pay Per Placement, Pay Per Performance or Pay Per Position) - It enables you to list your site at a particular position of the search results according to the keyword bid. You list your website by selecting keywords that refer to your products or services. For each keyword you determine how much you are willing to spend and what position you want. The higher you bid the higher your site will appear in the search results. You can start your bid from 1 cent per click for most of the major PPC engines; some PPC engines have a minimum bid of 5 cents per click.
How long does it take to have my web site indexed?
Please note that many search engines take a few days to a few weeks to index your web sites to their database. Many major search engines take more than 4 weeks even 6 weeks to index your web page. Please give yourself enough time for the engines to add your site to the database.
How Spider Engines Work:
Once you have submitted your web site to the engines, your URL will be first stored in a "temporary" database, and then the search engines will send a "robot" or "spider" regularly to "visit" your web site and determine whether your web site is to be indexed or not. Most major engines will "spider" your web site for more than 2 weeks, while some other engines may take more than 6 weeks.
Please note that there is no guarantee that search engines will index your web site even if the "robot" has visited your site and you will not receive any reply from those "spider" engines when your web site has been indexed.
How Directory Engines Work:
Directory type of engines like Yahoo are different to the spider engines such as "AltaVista", "Google" etc. Yahoo depends on real people to decide who gets listed in their indexes. Yahoo has lots of editors who review submitted sites and decide whether or not to include them on the Yahoo lists. There is no guarantee that an editor will even look at your site once you submit it and you would be extremely lucky if they were to accept your submission with in a few days.
How Pay-Per-Inclusion Engine Works:
For Pay-Per-Inclusion engines, your web site will normally be indexed within 2 to 7 days depending on the payment plan you sign up. Some Pay-Per-Inclusion engines such as Yahoo or LookSmart ask you to pay more if you would like to have your web site indexed within 3 days.
How your web site ranks?
Submitting your web site to the search engines and how well your web site will rank on the search engines are two DIFFERENT things.
Thousands of web sites are added to the search engines every day and if your website does not list in the top ten positions of the engines it will be very hard for people to find your web site. How well your web site rank depends on many factors.
To get your web sites listed at the top position of the search engine is a progress, it does not happen just overnight. You need to learn and study the way to improve your web ranking and use the tools we provide in our program. It is impossible to expect your web sites to be indexed at the top positions in just 2 or 3 days, it may take 2 or 3 MONTHS to move your web site from the bottom to the top.
How to improve your web ranking?
The most important way to improve your chances of getting listed--and highly ranked--on any search engine or directory is to use the correct words. Using all the tools we provide within the program you can optimize your web site and move it to the top position on all major search engines by the keywords you select.
With directories you need to choose the correct category for your web site and make sure that your pages are interesting enough to catch the editor's eye. Creativity can be the key to getting a good directory listing.
You need to be creative in a different way to attract a search engine's attention. Search engine spiders sort and rank sites using "keywords"--terms that they think describe the content on your site. These keywords can be located in one or more places on your page: the title, the first few paragraphs of text, and inside Meta tags on your pages. Not all search engines look for keywords in all of these places.
The content of your web page is the key to get your web site to be listed on the search engines. If your web site is only designed to 'look good' and contains only the images such as, flash, JavaScript etc, but there is no 'valuable' content on the page, your web site will be ignored by the search engines. This is because search engines are looking for web sites that contain 'valuable information' not just a 'good looking' image.
What is a Doorway Page?
A doorway page is a web page specifically designed to rank high in the Search Engines for a specific keyword or keyword phrase. It's NOT just a blank page with a link that redirects to your main page, but a powerful, content rich page packed with your keywords. A doorway page is sometimes called an entrance page, or information.
The Doorway Page is a web page that is specifically designed and contains more relevant keywords in a single page in order to rank higher in the spider search engines.
Ordinary web pages usually are not themed around particular keywords or phrases because your average web pages are not optimized properly.
Once you have selected your keywords and phrases (about 50 would be the normal) you need to build a doorway page for each keyword and ideally, for each major search engine. All the major engines look for different keyword density in the text, title and description so you need to do some research by doing a search using your chosen phrase or keyword and studying the top 10 results at each engine.
When you're ready to submit your pages to the Search Engines, submit only one page each day. If you've created several pages you'd like to submit, you may want to create an additional page that contains links to each of your doorway pages. That way, you can submit just your link page and let the Search Engines crawl the rest of your links.
Creating doorway pages is a powerful way to increase your website traffic, but don't stop at just one. Imagine how much traffic you'd receive with 100 keyword packed doorway pages all directed to your website.
What is Link Popularity?
The link popularity of your site is determined by: The number of web sites that are linking to your site (the web page that your link appears on, must be indexed by the search engine - just using those "free-for-all-links-pages" is not the kind of link that you're looking for.), The popularity of the sites are that are linking to your site and the similarity of the content on sites that link to your site. Every search engine to some extent uses link popularity. Ways to increase link popularity will be discussed below.
Click popularity:
Click popularity is the number of clicks that your site gets when it comes up on a search. So if your site is number 3 for a search, and it is being clicked on by people more than number 2, you can potentially move ahead of number 2. (If the engine uses click popularity in their algorithms.)
Excite and Direct Hit uses click popularity. Also, engines that are associated with Direct Hit, like Hotbot, indirectly use click popularity.
You can increase click popularity by having a good title and a good description of your website in your Meta tags.
How to find out what's Linking to you:
Different search engine uses different processes, for example:
For Google type into the search box: link:www.yourdomain.com this will give you a general estimate of your popularity. It will also tell you approximately how many pages from your site are listed with Google.
In AltaVista type into search box: link:yourdomain.com This will give you all of the pages which are linked to you in the same way as Google.
How can I increase link popularity?
Online DirectoriesGetting listings in directories will not only boost your traffic, it will also increase your link popularity. It is especially relevant to link popularity because these directories are very popular and remember the more popular a site is that links to you, the more popular your site will be rated.
Reciprocal LinksIt's a good idea to add reciprocal links to your site. The Internet is a web and it is joined by links. If you are offering good resource people will bookmark your site and come back. Part of offering resources is suggesting other places to find information.
Meta Tags
You can improve site's position and rank by applying these simple principals. There are several Meta tags but the most important ones for search engine indexing are the description and keywords. The description tag returns a description of the page in place of the summary the search engine would normally create. The keywords tag provides keywords for the search engine to associate with your page.
You must remember, that meta tags are not a magic solution and even if they are of good quality meta tags alone will not significantly raise the ranking of your website if it lacks sufficient content.
The Main Meta tags:
Title
Keywords
Description
Choose the right TITLE:
Make sure each page of your site has a descriptive title. Because search engines usually give the most weight to the page's title, you should place a descriptive phrase between the <TITLE> tags. For best results, it is best that you keep it within 200 characters and to the point and your HTML title should be both descriptive and attractive. For example, the following title describes well the site, and therefore is a good choice:
<TITLE>1st submit software - submit your web sites to over 1000 major search engines.</TITLE>
Meta Description Tag:
The Meta description tag is used to help those search engines which are meta capable in summarizing your website. The size of the Meta description tag should be under 200 characters. The basic html format of the Meta description tag is:
<meta name="description" content="simple webpage description">
Some actual sample tags:
The actual size used is not as important as the message it conveys, but do not exceed the limit. It must tell the reader what they will find on the website. In addition to these meta tags, you need to build a summary paragraph into your web page which can be used by the Search Engines which do not use the meta tags. This summary should be 170-200 characters maximum and be the first visible text on the screen when the page loads. Engines like Northern Light and Lycos will use this information for their summary of your web page. Therefore first 200 characters are very important for your web site to get higher rank in search engines.
Meta keyword tag:
The keywords tag is used by the Meta capable search engines to help aid them in indexing your website. This is important, the search engines use this information to determine under what queries your website will come up under.
The basic html format of the Meta keyword tag is:
<meta name="keywords" content="keyword1,keyword2,keyword3,keyword4,...">
OR
<meta name="keywords" content="keyword1 keyword2 keyword3 keyword4 ...">
The common abuse of the Meta keyword tag was -- and still is -- the repetition of words, which is called spamming. Never insert the same word twice in a row in this tag, even if you're using different variations. (Plurals, ALL CAPS, different tenses, etc.) You can use the same word in different phrases, but never use that word more than 3 or 4 times within the tag, even if you're using different variations of it.
How many keywords:
You need to aim for about twenty keywords as some search engines penalize pages that use only one or two words in the keyword meta-tags in an attempt to remove false gateway pages. Also if you're only using one or two keywords, you're probably missing out on traffic. Alternatively listing hundreds of keywords dilutes the keyword density, so you won't score well for any of them.
Prominence:This refers to how close to the beginning of the tag the keyword resides. The closer to the beginning the higher the prominence, so remember to put your most important keywords at the beginning.
